UC Irvine Hazing Prevention - wordmark

UC POLICY ON HAZING

Dear Campus Community,

UC Irvine values the well-being of our community. At UCI, we ask our community to Choose Kindness: Don’t Haze. Hazing can and does occur in various types of groups, not only student organizations, clubs, fraternities, sororities, and athletic teams. Hazing can occur in academic settings and departmental programs. The entire campus community must know how to recognize and act together to prevent hazing.

New Legislation

California recently passed Assembly Bill No. 2193, and the U.S. Congress passed The Stop Campus Hazing Act (SCHA), expanding laws on hazing prevention and transparency reporting. UCI is developing enhanced educational efforts for all students and employees to address these state and federal mandates.

Additionally, through the Annual Security Report and the Campus Hazing Transparency Report, UCI will inform the campus community, prospective students, and visitors of hazing data, incidents, and policies and procedures.

UC Policy Updates

Students

Please review the University of California Policies Applying to Campus Activities, Organizations and Students (PACAOS), which includes a prohibition on hazing in section 102.12.

Employees

Please review the University of California Abusive Conduct in the Workplace Policy, which includes a prohibition on hazing.

Training

We recommend that all students, academics, and staff review the Hazing Prevention Module. While created primarily for students, it contains helpful information that can be useful to all members of the UCI campus community. Additionally, new undergraduate and graduate students have received a separate link to the StandUp to Hazing Module, which is distinct from the Hazing Prevention Module linked above.

Hazing Prevention Coalition

In the Winter quarter of 2020, a Hazing Prevention Coalition was formed with the charge of convening campus and community partners to establish goals and lead hazing prevention efforts at UC Irvine.

The Hazing Prevention Coalition, comprising students, faculty, and staff, meets regularly and actively works on hazing prevention education and promoting a healthy campus culture.

Learn More

We encourage you to visit and share UCI’s Hazing Prevention website. The website is a hub for all campus community members to explore resources, options for reporting, definitions and more. To learn more about the Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Act and hazing as a Clery Act crime, visit this webpage.

Please join us in creating a campus environment free from hazing.
